All That Smiting written @ 12:32 PM on July 23, 2003 I went through the Book of Revelations last night for the hell of it. Umm, no pun intended. And let me tell you, there is some scary shit in that writing. Honestly, if Hollywood wanted to make the mother of scary movies, they should just do it on Revelations. How unnerving. I felt like I was sitting in a Jonathan Edwards' sermon. And you know what? The Old Testament is bleak as well. Depressing stuff. Personally, except for the rays of hope that shine down in the New Testament, I think the Bible has its views on God all wrong. I think the Good Book has made understanding God a lot more complicated than what it ought to be. Sure it's all a nice way to glorify The Man, but I don't know that He thinks along such rigid guidelines. But, on the other hand, to quote my painting professor, "We're all tryin' to get to the top of the same hill, we're just riding different donkeys." Suffice to say, I used last night to do quite a bit of thinking about a lot of things, looked into Psalms, tried Genesis but got extremely bored, and wasn't about to tackle the historical books with my mindset. A lot of things don't make sense to me anymore as far as being Catholic goes; I'm beginning to think that religion in general is only there to organize the masses and keep some lines of harmony so people don't end up killing each other over the "my god is better than your god" mentality. You know? But, on the same token, I could be wrong about a lot of things. And yet a lot of other people could be wrong about a lot of things too. Well, I totally lost my train of thought. I'm a bit confused right now because the Old Testament fucked with me last night; I don't think I agree with some of the Old Testament. All that smiting is scary. And the more I think about it, the more what I'm trying to do as far as combining my faith with many ancient practices go makes sense. I wish I knew what Dolan thought about it; I really don't know. I'm not trying to compromise anything, only enhance and explore what I have. Hmmm.
