Treillage Gallery written @ 10:28 PM on July 14, 2004 After reviewing yesterday's entry, I would like to add the following statement: Oh, fuck. Thank you. Now, the story as to how this twist of fate came about and how YOU can help keep Sam sane. Treillage (pronounced Tray-lawge.. it's French... sort of) is this well-to-do development in the W.C. featuring Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired houses. Apparently they're huge, fancy-shmancy things with lots of wall space and strange things in their front yards, such as topiaries and weird stuff like that. The realtors there began a program this summer to help sell the houses in which they would feature artists' work as people looked at the homes to help inspire customers to purchase these buildings. Artists get to keep 100% commission, so it's nice. I've never seen the houses; this is simply what I've heard about them. So already I'm breaking Searching-For-A-Gallery Rule #1, which states to review the space of your choice. But no matter... let me continue. Because the arts scene is not widely publicized in the W.C., not a lot of artists know about Treillage, so the realtors have come up short for a gallery for the month of August. Entrez,Arts Council... A local sculptor, Patti, art advocate Karen, and I-- members of the fine arts committee of the council-- met yesterday at Barnes and Noble over Jones Soda and caramel frappacinos to draft our plan of attack to change said problem about the arts not being widely publicized in the W.C. We have all kinds of goodies up our sleeves. For example, next month we're beginning an informal art critique/discussion group for the community, where art advocates and artists can get together and critique said artists' works in progress. In this way, artists from the W.C. begin to network and form a community amongst ourselves, which the W.C. lacks heavily. During the course of our conversation, the director of the arts council stopped by and mentioned that they were in need of artists at Treillage. Well, that set Patti off. Patti wanted to nab that opportunity ASAP. So she jumped in on it, Karen phoned another artist in our committee to jump in on it, and me, totally overwhelmed at what was happening and thinking Treillage would accomodate us in a month's time, I jumped in on it, too. "They need you on the 29th of July," our director proclaimed. Patti's response was instantaneous: "We'll do it." And bam-- suddenly I had the first gallery show of my career. The details: Treillage is having a large reception on the 29th of July. They're sending out 1500 invitations to their clients. It's a suit-and-tie-and-dress affair, complete with hors d'oevues, fine wine (which leaves me shit-outta-luck at age 20), and a harp player. They doing press releases in the paper, and the Arts Council is even doing marketing for Patti, Len, and me. All this info that was thrown at me yesterday has left me reeling. All my extraneous projects have been put on hold to begin the long process of writing out artist statements, bios, getting business cards printed, sending out formal invites to all my own clients and family and friends, matting, framing, mounting work, getting business tags, finishing works-in-progress, typing business forms, contract writing, finishing my website-- and only Jesus Christ Himself knows what else. All this in two week's time (so much for my dreams of having a show at the end of August, when I'd have enough time to put together something of high quality)-- made worse by the fact that I have three other jobs to tend to. It's great that I'm about ready to go professional. I just wish someone had let me know beforehand. You know? Now, how you can help Sam keep sane... If someone has a digital camera they can let me borrow, that would be a huge help. Two, this goes to Jessica: please, please, PLEASE let's schedule some more time slots so I can finish your painting in time for the show. Three, if you're in the W.C. or thereabouts send me your addresses so I can send out formal invites ASAP. Four, if you have the addresses of family and friends who would like to attend, please send that as well. Five, if anyone would like to help me frame (it's a long process involving steel frames, hardware, wire, glass, mat cutting, and gloves), please let me know. I'm not panicking. I'm just trying to do this as "by the book" as possible in such a short period of time. Other than that, I'm FREAKIN' excited about this! And you're all invited to come!! And I promise I'll go on a nice long vacation after this.
