The Diary of Queen Mothy |
Bigger and Better Things written @ 10:00 PM on September 16, 2003 All right, I decided to write this evening because I know you are all just dying to hear the results of my photography crisis extravaganza that I had myself this weekend. So here goes... Saturday night, after writing my last entry, I trudged into the darkroom with my friggin' army fatigues on-- because, to be frank, this was war. It took me nearly forty-five minutes to break the casings and get the film from the three rolls and load them on to the reels. By the time I had finished, just about every one of the my fingernails had broken. But that's beside the point. Confirming my worst suspicions, the two rolls of film that I shot with my rotting corpse of a camera Canon AE-1 did not make it. One roll was completely blank (the film of which I intend to use in a mixed media art project somewhere down the line-- with the remnants of pieces of my CD player to illustrate how much I hate technology that is not Sam-proof) and the other whose negatives were fogged so much by the broken shutter that they're not worth developing at all. The third roll, however, which I shot with my new Nikon N65 came out beautifully. You should see the pictures of my cats. There's this one black and white that I shot of Pierre against the brick wall on the back porch that I'm going to make into a fine print; I'm going to make Mom hang that one up in the laundry room. And my pictures from the woods were nice too. So in the end I pulled through the crisis. But you know what this means: back to the woods or around campus to find moving objects for my shutter speed project due on October the seventh. I did managed to finish my twenty proof prints due this Thursday. But all in all I had spent five and a half hours in the darkroom on Saturday night and did not get back to my dorm room until around one in the morning Sunday. It wasn't a total waste, though. I know what to expect this time; and thank God my new camera has a shutter speed priority option so I don't have to fret about f-stops. *** I am about to hit another personal Renaissance. At long last I have a lot of ideas for art projects that I want to pursue. My work has taken on an extremely color-oriented expressive line quality that has made the last couple of serious drawings I've completed in my art class a success. My style has become such that proportion matters but is not the focus: the energy behind the figure drawings and the temperature and the mood are what really counts. Basically, I have found a way to bring very painterly qualities to drawing, and now, with the first couple weeks of classes under my belt, I have something that I can frame and put in a college show. You have no idea how happy this makes me. Next I'm going to be tackling a large canvas. It's going to be an oil painting of swans for my mother for Christmas, only it's going to be done in my new style. If I exploit the colors in this otherwise muted composition, I will have struck gold. I also think I'm going to be making more trips to the rehearsals in the theater. I went to The Crucible rehearsal this evening and did some gesture drawings for two hours, and for simple gestures they have pleased me. Listening to the actors rehearse only fused more energy and drama in my line work. So what I think I'm going to do is buy a disposable camera, snap some pictures, and bring theater back to my canvas. Only this time I'll do it the way it should have been done when I was in AP Art my senior year of high school. Oh yes. We're onto bigger and better things here, folks! This is going to be big! And as soon as I convince Tricia to come to my studio space with her digital camera, I'll post my work here.
