Let's Hear It For TV! written @ 9:19 PM on February 02, 2004 Ahhh, life is beginning to even out for me. I finished the bulk of my scenic design work for tomorrow and will be handing in my ground plans to the technical director so his crew can begin construction; I made a strong start on my essay for my film studies class; and my copy of a Renoir flower arrangement is going according to plan thus far. On a side note, however, my painting professor thinks I'm crazy. I showed him the painting of this flower arrangement Pierre-Auguste Renoir did in 1889 of roses, snap dragons, and other flowers, adding as I turned to the page in my Renoir book, "I dunno, I might be insane for attempting this." One glance from my professor was all it took, and he agreed nonchalantly, "Yup. You are nuts." "Figured as much. But I wasn't about to attempt this," and then I flipped to a page that was a still life of geraniums and two kittens. "I see," my painting professor said. But then he declared, "Welp, I think your skills are such that you can do your first choice flower arrangement." So I am. Like I said, it's going all right so far, but I'm kicking myself in the ass for choosing to copy Renoir's work. Everybody else in class has either chosen this other 20th century still life artist whose name I can't recall at this moment, or the early work of Manet or Matisse. One thing that bugs the hell out of me from my fellow art majors is that even now they are choosing the easy way out. I'm not saying that copying work from Manet, Matisse, or the other guy is easy, but on the other hand it's true you can mimick their styles more successfully than, say, Renoir or van Gogh, where color and brushstroke almost always take top priority if you're trying to copy. Anyway, that's a rant for another day. The point is that as far as the art and theatre aspects of my life go, everything is settling into place after a few rocky weeks in the semester. The one thing I have left to do is convince my sculpture professor to let me attempt to make the wood unicorn dressing screen I spent most of the day yesterday planning. It's really neat, actually. I've blended the legend of the unicorn into three panels, complete with the Medieval, Indian, Middle Eastern, Chinese and Japanese aspects of the story. That I can pull off the piece there is no doubt in my mind . . . But can I do it in four weeks? Maw-ha-ha-haa! Methinks Sam must work her magic somehow, eh? *** Question for the Day: Was I the only one in America who wasn't offended by Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake's performance at the Super Bowl last night? First of all, let me stop right here and say that it was a terrible show from an artistic performance stand point. I was completely lost with the P.Diddy/Nelly/Mikey Mouse ordeal, and if Kid Rock goes to jail for what he did to that flag it wouldn't surprise me in the least. Second, spokespersons for NBC, MTV, and Jackson and Timberlake's agents can say all they want about it being a "malfunction" in her wardrobe-- the truth of the matter is that I know what I saw, and the ripping off her black, brassiere "thang" was no accident. People who thought her breast was fake are fools; take it from me, kids: I've been in drawing classes with female nude models before and I know how "freed breasts" behave on well developed women. And now I give you permission to laugh at that ludicrous sentence. You know what I think happened? Timberlake got caught up in the "energy" of the moment and made a spontaneous, albeit bad, choreographical decision. But I wasn't offended, strangely enough. It didn't even occur to me what took place until I realized they had done it on live television... on NBC... during the Super Bowl... in front of 89 million viewers. Then I thought of Howard Stern and how the FCC was always fining his radio station for indecency; I think they'll leave him alone after this. *** The highlight of my night, however, was Survivor! Oh boy, oh boy! They sure sacked Tina early, and if Ethan was smart he'd join Rudy and Rupert's alliance. If he does, then that's the trio I'll be rooting for. Well, I'm hungry. I hear my Raman noodles beckoning for attention...
