The Diary of Queen Mothy |
Pro-fessionale! written @ 7:44 PM on July 30, 2004 Well! *sigh of relief* The art opening at Treillage last night was a success by my book! A lot of people came, including members from the high school posse and the college capadres, not to mention some teachers from both high school and college. Then there were a lot of people just stopping in, people from the Arts Council, the Chamber of Commerce, and many a high-profile individual from the W.C., including the superintendent. The Enquirer even covered it. So there I was, in my little black number, my hair properly brushed out for the first time in months, doing my publicity stunt meet-and-greet thang. I felt slightly awkward, it being my first real show, but over all I was very excited and got loads of positive feedback. I actually sold a piece! Feast your eyes on the following: Vine of the Earth, oil on theatre flat This was sold to my neighbors down the street, the ones I cat-sit for when they're at their second house in Arizona. This was the first in my Fruit Studies 2004 Series, of which there is going to be a total of five works. They intend on hanging it above their wine collection, which is just fine by me. They get a 10% discount coupon toward their next original Sam-work (I'm beginning to enjoy the whole marketing aspect of art)! I heard the most positive remarks for the third piece in my Fruit Studies 2004 Series: Grandma's Strawberries, oil on theatre flat I can bet that if I sell another piece, this one will be the next to go. The show was such a success, actually, that the people at Treillage want to extend the gallery for another month, so my work isn't going to come down until the end of September. Meanwhile, we're adding another artist to the group, therefore giving us another excuse to throw a wine and cheese reception and therefore have more time to publicize and get the word out at all the local art venues and papers. As opposed to having a two-week notice, you know? To top all this off, Len, one of the other artists showing with me, is passing my name off to some people in New York to get my work appraised by contacts of his. He wants me to get a gallery show in NYC. I said, Are you flippin' nuts? One, I don't have enough artwork or clout to convince an NYC gallery to stable my stuff; two, I'm 600 miles away from my playland; and three, I'm 20 and not even out of school! Oi vey! But he insisted. I have no idea how far this is going to go, if anywhere, but in the meantime I'd love to at least get some feedback from folks in the business. To be sure, I don't want a fast rise to the top. I want to earn that NYC gallery and do it the right way... I know that sounds stupid, but my number one rule is to let my art grow and respect the art before allowing room for the dollar. For me, getting the chance to do something like this at Treillage was an honor enough. So now I'm at the point where I'm like, What happens next? I continue with my work, that's what happens. I continue working with the flowering drive on what inspires me. I have a lot to do with the three weeks left in my summer vacation. I have two more fruit paintings, at least five or six more landscapes of Keehner Park, and then after that, I'm going to tackle whatever subject matter I find beautiful in Myrtle Beach this weekend. My work is going to carry well on into the school year, as it should. But for now, I am on vacation. I need one week of rest before I pick up where I left off. I'm just about packed and now I have to catch a few hours of Zs before I'm on the road early tomorrow morning. For a change of pace, I washed and waxed my car this afternoon... It promptly rained five minutes after I turned off the hose. I have odd luck, don't I?
