The Diary of Queen Mothy |
Quick Rant written @ 3:31 PM on March 08, 2003 Quick Rant: I have at last found a worthy pet peeve to satisfy my soap box rants for the next 20 years of my life, much better than people pronouncing the 't' in "mature" and people doing that funny tongue sliding thing as in the word "schedule" and, most importantly, fundamentalist Christians. I have been working on my research for my persuasive speech for class, you see, in which I defend the protocols of a free speech society and lobby against those who take extreme measures of censorship against children's literature-- such as Harry Potter. My research has whisked me away into a world of censorship/anti-censorship laws and plunged me into lists of the country's most challenged books. The results may surprise you. For the results of "The 100 Most Challenged Book of 1990-2000,"* here's a taste of some dispicable nonsense idiots and school boards alike have challenged: 1. "Scary Stories" (Series) by Alvin Schwartz 3. "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou 4. "The Chocolate War" by Robert Cormier 5. "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain 6. "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck 7. "Harry Potter" (Series) by J.K. Rowling 16. Goosebumps Series by R.L. Stein 22. "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle 56. "James and the Giant Peach" by Ronald Dahl 96. "How to Eat Friend Worms" by Thomas Rockwell *This list was compiled by the Office for Intellectual Freedom Intellectual freedom indeed! Reading through some of this stuff, specifically the anti-Potter shit floating around on the Internet, really pissed me off and gave me a further reason to hate all fundamentalist. My views are if you're going to stop your kids from reading certain material, that's just fine, but don't do it at the expense of the entire school district. I'm actually infuriated. As an artist and a writer, I think I've been given a taste of the shit I may be facing in my professional career. "In the first place God made idiots. This was for practice. Then He made School Boards." Mark Twain
