The Diary of Queen Mothy |
Some Num-Nums! written @ 3:51 PM on September 22, 2003 The students in the art department who want to be elevated to BFA status are about to embark on the terror that is portfolio review. This was all we talked about in my 410-level drawing class today. Being a sophomore, most of what they talked about was all Greek to me. But here's the thing: they expect students at the end of their sophomore year to apply for BFA if they want it. But you need two classes in your area of emphasis, a 3-D course, and a significant body of work to go along with all that-- none of which I really have. So I have just spent the last hour trying to plot out my schedule for the next two years. To be frank, I am just now beginning to realize what it means to be a double major. And to that, all I have to say is, "Oh... shit." I have orchestrated my schedule so that the earliest I can apply for BFA-status is spring semester of my junior year. I expect to fail. I should probably do it my first semester my senior year, but we'll see how things are going this time next year. And can I have a "hell yeah" for summer classes? I'm going to have to work a few jobs between now and next summer. I plan to kill a few mundane theater and general studies courses, whilst holding down some jobs for moolah. Yeah, I can get this to work out. Seriously, I don't want to go to college for more than five years... but unless I take these summer courses, we're looking at seven. Oh yeah, that was no exaggeration. And to think that I want to go to London and France in all this. Tie me the fucking noose! I confided some of my thoughts to my drawing professor, and his answer for me was, "Don't worry about it, grasshopper." (On a side note, grasshopper has become my nickname in the art department... couldn't tell you why...) I'm just so intimidated. In spite of taking the maximum number of hours needed to proceed along merrily at this university, I feel like all my efforts and time spent slitting my wrists over my classwork has amounted to nothing. Bummer, eh? *** Speaking of going to London, I have another hilarious Alan Rickman story for Jessica. There's this guy in the theater department who is not exactly the brightest crayon in the box named Brandon. Last winter he went to London on the department-wide trip to London where, I presume within a few month span when Rachel's Alan Rickman story occurred-- he ran into this smashingly jolly-good actor on the streets. Brandon, however, being the klutz that he is, slipped over the ice on the pavement and literally barreled head first into Rickman, who went flying face first into the pavement. I don't know what happened after that. I do know, however, that Alan is now probably very weary of the students from Northern Kentucky University. Is that not hilarious, or what?! When my friend Allison, who was RA of our dorm last year, told me about that, I about keeled over laughing. So, Jessica, that one was for you. Just think: I'm connected to Alan Rickman by three degrees! LOL *** I saw Secondhand Lions on Friday night. I give it the Sam Reno Stamp of Approval and highly recommend it. It's a winner. Also with the Sam Reno Stamp of Approval is the soundtrack to Notre Dame de Paris, specifically the English version. It opened up on Broadway around the time that Disney released its version of the story by Victor Hugo, but failed miserably with American audiences. Even so, it has some of the most dramatic theatrical music this semi-pro dabbler of theater has heard, and I highly recommend listening to this CD. Barnes & Noble price: $17.99; Amazon.com price: significantly cheaper. Third Sam Reno Stamp of Approval today is Edouard Vuillard, a so-called "decorative artist" from the turn of the last century. This link is for the image gallery on Yahoo! but you'll get the idea. Check Vuillard out some time. *** Daily rant fest: my roommate. God, she fucking talks a lot. That's it. *** Okay, okay, I realize most of you are only reading this because you want an update on the Sam-Dan situation. The fact of the matter is that Linsey is making it very awkward between us because she's blatantly trying to fix us up. Which is under my top ten pet peeves. Linsey is not my favorite person in the world right now. On the other hand, I sense Dan is plotting moves of his own and mustering some courage. We shall see, shan't we? *** Lastly, today is the 100th anniversary of ice cream or the ice cream cone or some shit Dairy Queen-related getting patented, so the girls from the dorm are all going out this evening for free ice cream. Num-nums!
