The Diary of Queen Mothy |
Happy Titanic Day! written @ 4:42 PM on April 15, 2004 Well. Well, well. Well, I just had the worst production meeting in the history of theatre as contemporary art knows it. It was the first one for this Nunsense show, and you know how I feel about initial impressions. I've written about the director before in my diary. In a phrase, Professor Snape from the Harry Potter series meets a cultured version of Satan-- voila, you have our director. For the purposes of my story, we'll call her... Diablo. To start out with, Diablo did not tell her designers what direction she wants to take the show in, what concept or theme she would like us to follow-- basically, what on God's green earth she wants. Just to inform those intelligent people who stay out of the theatre, it's usually good idea to give your crew a clue. So I present my sketches and ground plans, and what does she comment on? Dressing space. Dressing space! And prop storage! Not the concept, not the placement of the scenery, not any of the color choices! I threw out all my ideas onto the table, and she wants to know about Step #167 when we haven't even breached Step #1! Oh yes, I told her about the cross-over space and the downstage, centerstage, and upstage walls-- and she seems to think that won't be enough room. People, let me be honest: IS FORTY BY TWENTY-FIVE FEET WORTH OF STAGE NOT ENOUGH FOR FIVE CAST MEMBERS?! By the time the meeting ended, I was so completely drained, and with less of a clue as to what the sets were going to look like than before. *Dr. Evil voice* Throw me a frickin' bone here! But I am not discouraged. Nay, I won't be defeated by the face of evil. On the contrary, I, Queen Sam of this little space on the World Wide Web, do accept Diablo's challenge to this creative war. Next meeting, I'll be armed with my best weapons: models, drafted elevations, color renderings, and ground plans. Bring it on. *** Today I was perusing City Beat, Cincinnati's "underground" newspaper, and there was a classified ad for designers in a theatre downtown. I dropped the artistic director a note to see if they need any scenic designers/artists. If I'm lucky, I might land a second job this summer... or for the rest of the year, seeing as they asked for designers to cover their entire season. Cross your fingers. I need the moolah. *** Happy 92nd Titanic Day, kids! Tricia and I are listening to the musical soundtrack as I type, and it's so *melodramatic sniff* beautiful...
