The Diary of Queen Mothy |
Wideacre written @ 7:34 PM on October 05, 2003 I just read one of the most disturbing works of literature I have come across in all my life: the first Wideacre novel by Phillipa Gregory, who also wrote The Other Boleyn Girl. While I will be the first to sympathize with Beatrice Lacey's plight to own her family land in Gregorian England, she was quite possibly the most extraordinarily evil heroine I have ever encountered. I consider myself to be a rather liberal individual, but the Highly Disturbed Meter was off the charts when you consider the murder, the incest, the lying (oh yes, the lying), the betrayal, the coldness, and the extreme manipulation this heroine mazed herself through. All I have to say is Jesus Christ and Goddamn. If this book was enough to make me turn gray hairs, I'd hate to know what it would do to someone not-so-liberal as me. And in spite of the fact that it did not end like I had hoped it would, I am pleased to state strongly that Beatrice Lacey got every bit of what was coming to her! *deep breath* Yeah, the book was that good. It got my Stamp of Approval, but you have been warned: it's not for the weak-hearted. The second and third books, The Favored Child and Meridon, are officially on my Christmas list. Now I'm reading Freedom and Necessity by Steven Brust and Emma Bull, which has intrigued me since I saw it on a bookshelf at Borders months ago.
