The Diary of Queen Mothy |
My First Full Scholarship written @ 2:41 PM on February 23, 2002 Yesterday was the Mock Trial competition. To tell you the truth, I really didn't understand how serious people took this thing until I reached the Hamilton County Court House. I was playing Principal Nell Authority, and the case was about whether or not I lawfully employed the DNA testing of students after one student was beaten up in a hate crime. I've been going to these Mock Trial rehearsals and meetings for two months now, and I did it to do Elliott a favor because he needed people. After a while, I had wished I had not gotten involved because my school work was suffering after everything else I'm involved in, but it was a neat experience. Liz and I had to leave the competition early to go back to school to work on the sets for the musical. However, when we called Christine, she said everyone had already packed up and went home. So I went home. And when I got there, I found an envelope from Northern Kentucky University on the kitchen table. Mom was laughing and talking to my grandmother on the phone. "Oh, look who's here," said Mom. "I thought she'd never come home." And then she pointed to the envelope on the table. Now, I had previously been accepted to NKU back in November, and they had called me a couple times to apply for their scholarships, but as far as my list of schools went, NKU was at the bottom of the list because I didn't think they had a strong graphic design program like University of Cincinnati. Their theater program is a hidden jewel, so I'm told. In any case, the school has come a long way in the past couple of years, and they're trying to make a prestigious name for themselves. So when Mom pointed to that envelope on the table, I thought it might have been another brochure reminding me how "wonderful" NKU was. Inside was two papers. You know what the first one said? "We are pleased to inform you that out of 400 high school seniors who applied, we chose you to receive our Presidential Scholarship. . . This scholarship is equal to full tuition." I received full tuition to NKU. I received full tuition to NKU. I received full tuition to NKU. My initial reaction: "WHAAAAAAT?!?!?!?!?!?!" My dad's initial reaction: "Holy shit..." My mom's initial reaction: "Oh my God, I KNEW that was going to happen..." My brother's initial reaction: "..." While a full scholarship is pretty much offering me an open door to have all my ambitions and dreams come true, I have a problem: it's still NKU with a weak art program. And I'm more interested in the quality of the programs than how much money they give me, although I am HUGELY grateful. At this point, it's all going to rest on what the University of Cincinnati gives me from their scholarship competition. And what happens with my RISD application. Mom says we have to go back down there and review the art and theater departments. I'm concerned whether or not I'll make the right connections at NKU. They offer a ton of interesting classes, but I'm worried about post-graduation work. I don't want to starve immediately after college, even though the finest things in the world were created on an empty stomach. Jeez. Receiving a full scholarship still hits me as completely surreal, just as September 11 still strikes me as surreal. A full scholarship may mean the answer to anyone else's problem, but for me it only complicates things. I don't know what to do. My relatives are thrilled and so happy for me. And I'm happy that if I do end up going to NKU, Mom and Dad won't have to pay a cent and they could have money for retirement. Plus it would help my brother get into whatever college he would can because, well, let's just say he's not the brightest crayon in the box. And it would give me the opportunity to try my hand at a double major. So many plus sides. So many cons. I have faith God will reveal the answer in time. For now, I'm on cloud nine. Well, maybe NKU is wise for wanting to recruit me if they want to make a name for themselves. *sneaky grin* If they're good to me, I can work wonders for them.
