The Diary of Queen Mothy |
First Days of New Semester written @ 9:37 PM on January 13, 2004 Okay, it's been a while since I've been around the D-land block, so here goes the latest... Well, the latest is that my days of supreme uselessness have ended, I've moved back to the dorms, and the Spring '04 semester has officially begun, gosh-golly-gee. My schedule is bizarre as far as class times go, but the fabulous news is that I don't have class until 11:00 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays-- unprecedented! The first class is my fundamentals of theatrical design, which is supposed to be for freshmen who are pondering entering theater tech. Well, I'm a sophomore and already tackling the set designs for a show, so suffice it to say I'm only in this class because it's a degree requirement. Shouldn't be too bad in the long run, or nothing a bit of studying couldn't take care of. Next was my basic painting class, another degree requirement, and I was bored to tears the first day when my professor began going over brush types, oil paint colors, brush care, and the oh-so-many uses of a palette knife-- stuff I've been working with since junior high. My professor has seen my work and noted I should at least be in the intermediate class, but it's a necessary evil for my degree. Oh well, I guess. He mentioned something to me about giving me more challenging assignments. I went art supply shopping today with Christine, and our first stop was Lowe's. My professor requested that each painting student have one 4x4' piece of masonite, and knowing Christine has a bigger car than mine to transport it, we decided to use her car. Well, damn it, after I bought the two pieces of 4x4' we discovered that her trunk tapers into her hatch-back, and we couldn't get either piece into either the trunk or back seat. I trudged back into the hardware store and had the pieces cut down an extra foot. The point of this tale is to illustrate how my painting class is already becoming a pain in the ass. Tuesdays begin an odd trend in my schedule. First thing in the morning I have my sculpture class, which becomes more and more intimidating the more I think about it. My professor struck me as a washed-out hippie from yonder-year, and he spent the first hour of class explaining how our eyes worked and "since over 80% of what we see is contrived from our brain's inner memory, what if what we are seeing really isn't there at all?" A ponderous question, no doubt, but such a ponderous question means only one thing to me: he's an *gulp* abstract artist. Lord knows I'm no good at the abstract stuff. Our first assignment due Thursday is to create "something" from found objects and trash. So I spent a part of my day tearing a broken CD player to pieces, which I'm going to reassemble into something... else... and cut up some AOL CDs, and see if any one else has any broken gadgets around the dorm they don't want to dissect and "sculpt." I don't know what my reasoning for doing such a thing is, and so far all I plan to tell the class on Thursday is that "I'm attracted to shiney objects." All in all, if I pull off an A in sculpture, it's going to be hard earned, and my professor strikes me as the type to give me the run-around to get it-- all the while disillusioning me to three-dimensional art and banishing me to World 2-D. Then I whisked away to my acting class-- yet another degree requirement. I have a lot of non-majors and shy freshmen theater majors. If we weren't a room full of strangers, my loud, histrionic personality is a blatant contrast. My teacher for this class seems wonderful and bubbly and cool. This semester has really brought me back down to basics, though; next week we're beginning monologues. *shrugs* Deja vu, indeed. An interesting change of pace is my survey of western art history class. My teacher is kind of eccentric, and I find his views on the purposes of prehistoric art to be slightly conservative. But history was always one of my stronger suits, and when I was a kid, I would rip through art history books as if it were the last books I would ever read if I suddenly went blind. He actually began lecturing on chapter one this evening, mostly about the cave paintings in Lascaux, Altamira, and Chauvet, and about Jericho and Catal Huyuk and Stonehenge. I've read so much on all those places that I didn't really learn anything new. Even so, it's nice to have a lecture course as a change of pace from my studio and hands-on classes. Then for the past two nights auditions for Jesus Christ Superstar, A Piece of My Heart, and The Imaginary Invalid were going on, and the department has been mad with preparation for that. I helped with the musical's auditions last night and didn't get out of there until after 11pm some time. I have a production meeting for A Piece of My Heart next Tuesday, where I'll present to them my first set designs, so cross your fingers and hope they'll get approved. Over all, it's been a really busy past two days. I've got a lot to do and I'm having trouble getting focused. I think Christine is settling into NKU well enough, but such transitions always take some time. Anyway, I've gotta cut this shorter than I planned. A bientot!
