Silent Films written @ 10:42 PM on January 14, 2004 Remember that mini-sculpture from my sculpture class that's supposed to be made out of found materials and trash? One word: Yikes. I ended up gutting two CD players and a clock and cutting various AOL and blank CDs, removing all the microchips and buttons and odd things that you don't expect to find in a CD player. Then I dug through the garbage in the theater's scene shop to find some wood pieces and scrap steel. And in the end I got this bizarre conglomeration of shiny surfaces and green metalic micro-paths. To be honest, I'm not sure how I'm going to explain this... thing... to my class. Well, actually, I sort of do. "I was attracted to shiny objects as a kid... Technology gone awry... I liked disassembling things when I was a kid and figuring out how things worked... People don't realize what a sophisticated piece of equipment a CD player truly is... It's a metaphor to how complicated our society has become..." In other words, B.S. Overload, with a capital O. *** I had my first films studies class tonight. My professor is the same guy I had for my English class last spring, so I'm familiar with his methods but I'm going to like this class much better than English. We watched clips from well known silent films of the Lumiere brothers, Mellies, Porter, and D.W. Griffith, and it was pretty interesting. Actually, I think I'm hooked on the old silent films now. What a neat collection that would be, eh? A silent movies collection. Hmm... In many ways, although their modes of production were primitive by modern film standards, they were extremely artful, expressive, and highly emotional. Boy, I tell you, I think this semester is going to open up a whole new can of beans for me, or many an avenue for higher thought and creativity.
