The Diary of Queen Mothy |
All the Difference in the World written @ 9:30 PM on March 18, 2004 What a wild day in the theater scene shop. You see, I have these camouflage nets I'm using in place of regular curtains for A Piece of My Heart, and Mica, our technical director, ordered them the Thursday before spring break. Well, shit, they haven't come in yet, and the show friggin' opens next Thursday (wow, where does the time go?). Anyhoo, Steve, Mica, and I spent a good deal of this afternoon fretting about what the hell we're going to do if we don't get our camou netting-- and it's a big deal because it's integral to my set designs, so Steve made a bunch of phone calls to everyone he knows in Cincinnati who might have nets and ran out to get three of them this afternoon. In the meantime, I pulled my resources together, got the crew to finish painting the theater floor, and sewed the tattered nets we had from storage back together and hung them on stage. Finally Steve came back with the aforementioned three nets, and we tore those up, sewed them together to mimick curtains, and hung the damn things before the bright hour of 5pm. Right now, I have a bloomin' headache from the whole affair. We're still missing five nets. Five! The distributor that we ordered them from wouldn't give us a straight answer as to when we'll get them, but Steve said we're looking at no later than 2pm tomorrow afternoon. So *sigh* we'll see, I guess. The set looks really neat... I just find it kind of amusing how we have three or four different nets up there and none of them match. Yessir, it's a hodge-podge of textures but it's neat. I guess the whole thing just has my heart rate going because dry tech is Saturday... which means I'm going to be holed up in the dark theater all afternoon. I don't know why they need me there-- all my work is essentially done-- but there I go-- and with me all my homework. *** The student art show opened this evening, and it was quite the event. What a difference it makes to see artwork outside the studio; I recognized a bunch of pieces from people who share studio spaces on the fourth floor, my work not withstanding. I didn't win anything, of course, and I didn't expect to really. Just like the audition in theatre, juried art shows mean intense competition. It was really an honor enough that I managed to get my two figure drawings into it. Besides, there's always next year, and my drive for better work has been restored; we'll see what kind of work I can come up with this summer. There really was a fabulous array of art, many of the pieces simply amazing. I didn't stay long because it was unbearably crowded, and I think I'll go into the gallery some other time when I have the chance to stop and think. My mom is coming down to school tomorrow to have lunch with me and see the gallery. They have my framed pictures up toward the back of the gallery side by side, and they look really nice. To all aspiring artists out there, never underestimate the power of presentation; as my grandfather and my own father used to say, "If you're going to do a job, do it right." Because it really does make all the difference in the world.
