The First Batch o' Classes written @ 10:14 AM on August 26, 2003 So much has happened the past three or four days that I don't have time to put it down here before my Tuesday classes start, so here's the run-down of how classes are going so far: 1. International Politics: My professor is a tall, black man with a Jamaican accent who worked in the diplomacy services for fifteen years. The first thing he told us right off the bat is that "governments lie to their people." Already I like this guy. The class is going to kick my ass and use big words that I will never be able to pronounce, but I have a feeling it's going to be like Mr. Hagaman's government class in the eleventh grade: you'll learn a lot even if you don't pass. 2. Introduction to Archaelogy: My professor here is, to be frank, my new hero. Hell, if I wasn't already going to graduate in 70 years, I'd tack on archaelogy/anthropology as a third major. The good thing about this class is that not only am I guaranteed to get an A, not only is the class full of idiots, my professor also tends to take his students out for field work. And that's what has got me excited. 3. Stagecraft II: *ahem* Ladies and gentlemen . . . I GET TO LEARN HOW TO WELD IRON AND USE BLOW TORCHES!!! And that is a reason to celebrate anyday. 4. Advanced Drawing: Okay, this class is probably going to earn the Bitch Trophy of the Semester. This is a level 410 drawing class meant for seniors who are graduating... and here I am... a sophomore on her third semester... without even an official BFA status. Normally I would be excited that I shot up through the art department beanstalk so fast, except my professor truly drills the students with processes, resumes, getting professional work, sketchbooks, matting and framing, and not to mention regular artwork. While it sounds like I have reached a drawing class that is all a dream come true, I am positively terrified because I feel as though I am not prepared to do what the other seniors or doing-- or, to use the cliche, I am up the creek without a paddle. My professor is a fan of bitch work on top of all this. I don't know, maybe I'm just being lazy and/or was suddenly hit with the grim reality of being a professional artist. So... to rectify that, I applied for a private studio space on the fourth floor of the fine arts building. I did the paperwork, and now all I have to do is hand it in and wait. They usually don't grant studio spaces for anyone who is not a BFA junior or a senior, but this is a little gamble I'm going to take to see how much I can throw my weight around in this department this year. My professor seemed extremely supportive of the idea of me-- the youngin'-- getting a space, and it helps he's on the committee that deals out studios... So we'll see. Today I have Scenic Design I and Basic Photography. I'm looking forward to the first, dreading the second. *** The past couple of days, I have wondered whatever became of my rue-mate from last year. I happened to run into my old RA at the Matrix: Reloaded movie party last night, and apparently Stephanie #1 is living off campus, but no one has seen her. As for her friend Cassie the Drunkard, word has it she's pregnant, and Garrett, a boy who was in my art classes last year, is the father. Garrett is living in the new dorm complex, and Cassie is supposedly taking a semester off. Who didn't see all that coming from a mile away? *** As for my current roommate, we're doing well. She just talks too much, as I figured she would. Sometimes I block her out without even realizing it, other times I want to run... far away. But over all, for it being the second day of classes, we're doing peachy.
