History, According to Sam written @ 10:44 PM on September 03, 2004 Our latest project in typography is using type to illustrate the atmosphere of a historical event without using pictures (don't ask...). Our prof wants us to have a list of ten historical events, complete with dates and an outline of the event we choose to illustrate. Being an amateur guru of history (is that an oxymoron?), I began listing events off the top of my head and adding dates, such as the Titanic disaster, the Reign of Terror, the fall of Rome, the assassination of the Romanov dynasty, etc. Somehow the only "positive" historical event I came up with was the completion of the Sistine Chapel. I dunno, am I depressed or something? For some reason I couldn't come up with a good thing that happened in history worth illustrating in text, like the discovery of penicillin or sliced bread. Maybe I'm half emo or something, but I digress... One of the things I put down on my list was the proliferation of Alexander the Great's empire between 336 and 332 BC. That's when it hit me: do any of you realize that Alexander the Great could have possibly taken over the entire goddamned world if his troops weren't so lazy and began griping about going home by the time they reached India? Hell, we could all be speaking Greek today if old Alex had just put his fat foot down and said, "Fuck you, we're heading through the Himalayas and bringing the Olympics to Beijing 2300 years before it's supposed to happen, fuckers. Have some lentils and shut up. Next stop, Alaska." Chew on that one for a while. Of course, I also think things would have turned out a lot differently for the folks on the Titanic if they simply had duct tape with them, but that's simply my opinion. ... This has been another episode of "History, According to Sam." We now return to our regularly scheduled program.
