The Diary of Queen Mothy |
Landscape Painting written @ 11:11 PM on July 05, 2004 Ah, July 5th. A national holiday. There were four cars driving on 71 this morning. Three of them worked for Big Brother. One of them worked in theatre. Guess which four were headed to work. E, all of the above. All of us in the scene shop were rather disgruntled that we were among the twelve people working in both the state of Ohio and Kentucky today, and we weren't afraid to let the upper management know, i.e. glaring, muttering, brains checking out to a permanent lunch break. But we cleared a checkpoint; we only have one more show to build in the summer dinner theatre season, and then we'll be on vacation for two or three small weeks before hitting the books for the fall semester. I'm always very tired now, but this summer dinner theatre season has really drained me. Why? Because the art has been lost. It's assembly-line theatre to me. No one really cares about great theatre art in the summer. That has to stop and things must change. That's a rant for another day, though. The good news is that we did manage to get off work early. Only for me to head to my third job for the summer. Ovation Theatre has begun construction for the last show in their season, and I volunteered to help out to 1) get to know the crew I'll be working with and 2) it never hurts to schmooze a little. Hey, I'm all about playing the game. I received the script for the show I'm going to design next summer. It's called "The Water Children," and it's about a 30-something actress coming to terms with an abortion she had at 16 when she's asked to do a commercial for a pro-life group. Oh goodie, abortion. I sure know how to pick 'em, eh? In any case, so far it's a good script and a good challenge for me. Hell, I have a year to brainstorm designs (gotta love that aspect professional theatre), which frees me up to concentrate on NKU performances and, of course, my artwork during the school year. In the meantime, the artistic director says he's probably going to hire me to be a master painter during the fall. And that'll be my cup of tea. So, hazaa! In the world of the visual arts, I'm working on a new series of paintings surveying Keehner Park. I've taken pictures and am currently cleaning up compositions, but hopefully almost every evening now I'm going to be hiking into the woods to do landscapes. So far I have seven major oil/pastel paintings planned, have completed one study, and am laying the groundwork for oil painting number one. Landscape painting is a new experience for me. I never took much of an interest in it before until I saw some of my painting professor's work. His work is expressively realistic. If he paints a grassy hilly, he will paint every blade of grass, every poppy, every stem of Queen Anne's lace. If he paints a stream or a pond, he will color every ripple with painstaking care. He has a patience that my loose, expressive style has very little room for. His pieces, almost always on large canvases, can take your breath away in a gallery. *** I lost my train of thought. I think I'll stop here tonight.
