The Diary of Queen Mothy |
A New Start written @ 10:02 PM on June 17, 2004 The lesson to be learned here is that life resumes if you're ready to or not. To be honest I have not been myself lately, but otherwise I am back on track from... well... I guess "tragedy" would be the right word here. My life runs too fast to dwell on any one thing for very long. What use is dwelling anyway? It's not very productive. Even so, I was dreading Tuesday night because it would be the first time I would face my father since last Thursday. He was taking me out to dinner, and then we were going to go see the opening of the show I designed. He avoided all controversial subjects, from politics to his--um-- "lack of marriage" to my mother. (That sounded awkward.) He asked only once if I was "really okay." I haven't been able to give anyone a straight answer beyond the shrug of my shoulders and a muttered, "Yessum." Besides, what do you say to a man who will only hear what he wants to hear? There is no reason to fight. "Play the game," my mother tells me when I vent about Dad. But it was good that he did, indeed, avoid all "controversial" subjects. Our evening last night was a lot more pleasant than what I anticipated. I was craving the sweet ambrosia that is Steak&Shake, and afterwards we went to the theatre for the opening night of Meshugga-Nuns. And considering the directing job, the script, and the very nature of the show, it went very well. The show wasn't bad at all. It was a "leave all your cares at the front door" kind of musical, and suspend disbelief. My hot pink and lime green sets fit the performance like a glove, to be honest. (To this day, I still can't believe I got away with that color scheme.) Word has it that the Cincinnati Post slammed the show, however, and criticized much of the acting. I went looking for the article on the Internet because I wanted to know of any commentary on my design work, but I couldn't find it. I'm sure it'll pop up somewhere eventually. In any case, I don't care much for critics, especially those around here. Wednesday night another one of the shows I designed the sets for opened. CPAL Idol premiered on the Keehner Park amphitheatre's stage to a crowd of hundreds, with television coverage included. To let you all know, CPAL Idol is an American Idol-esque show open to kids all over Cincinnati. Last night was the age 8-12 division. We have to assemble and disassemble the sets every night because it's a public park atmosphere, so I did that (after a near disaster of the drill bit warping on us) and picked up a program. On the program's front cover was the logo for the event that I designed this spring, and on the inside was the CPAL logo that I designed in the spring of the eleventh grade. The kids competing on stage received t-shirts (again, with my logo on the front), and everywhere were huge banners for CPAL and the Arts Council (the design of which I "inspired.") I don't know if I'll ever get used to the surrealism that is seeing my artwork all over the area. It's happened often that random people-- or people I haven't seen in years-- will come up to me and say, "Hey, aren't you Sam? The girl that designed this or that and this and that..." Crazy, you know? This evening I did something different and went to Spring Grove Cemetery for a lecture on the art and sculpture of tomb stones. It was very interesting. I brought my sketchbook and made notations and quick studies of interesting architecture and sculpture. I would really like to go do some landscape studies down there, but I don't know if I'll be able to this summer. I have a lot lined up as far as my artwork goes. I'm still working on Jessica's portrait, but I'm also planning for more than six pieces down the road that I hope to complete this summer. I figure by staying busy it'll keep my mind off other things. So, what's coming up for me? Well, work continues as usual. I'm close to completing the props design for my school's next two plays. I'm going to be doing some prep work for my job at Ovation Theatre in a few weeks; you know, get to know the place and the people and maybe help with the construction of their sets before I dive into my job this fall. This week has been kind of crazy because of CPAL Idol, and hopefully after it's done the dust will begin to settle and I can concentrate on my art a little more. In any case, I keep on going in the typical Sam-has-20-projects-going-on-at-once mode that I'm infamous for. ;-) This will be a good summer.
