The Performance Gallery written @ 1:11 PM on May 31, 2003
*** Started work on my second job. The show is called "In Flame," and is destined to be a U.S. premiere production. Apparently it was a big hit in London, and now the Performance Gallery downtown has secured the rights to do it. The Performance Gallery is only about a year old, and they're just now getting into the swing of things as far as performing true plays go. They're located in this big pink church that's over 100 years old-- a truly magnificent space by my personal standards reeking of history-- and according to Regina, the director of this show, they've been having a hard time getting artists and designers (cue: entrez-moi!) because the place still hasn't built up a solid reputation, in spite of the fact that they got rave reviews from The Enquirer about their latest production, "The Maids." On Thursday I went down there to meet some of the technicians, actors, and people who run the place. Regina and Kristin gave me a general tour of the church, and even though the space is very nontraditional in the ways of theater, already I was beginning to see many possibilities. The drawback? I have a $100 budget and a crew amounting only to volunteer workers. I can manage with both, but of course it's always something to keep in mind. I also received the script. Yesterday afternoon after work, I read through the play twice... Extremely bizarre little production, slightly avant-garde. In fact, I couldn't even begin to tell you what it's about because I haven't grasped the themes and surrounding concept. I understand the connections between characters and the gist of the story, but the statement the author is trying to make eludes me except for the fact that a vicious cycle keeps affecting the characters in both 1908 and modern society. At this point, I think it's one of those plays where it's better to see it performed rather than read it. But I've gotten neat ideas for the sets using the supplies stashed in the church basement and with my meager $100. Should be an interesting ride. *** Saw "Finding Nemo" last night. Hats off to Pixar! It was hilarious.
