The Diary of Queen Mothy |
A Piece of My Heart written @ 12:38 PM on November 08, 2003 I finally received my "financial care package" from Dad. He sent me more than I expected, which is a good thing. He kept insisting that I "keep it a secret" from my mom; I rolled my eyes when I read that in his e-mail. His attempts to foster a relationship with me separate from my mom are sad. It's hard to put into words why. When I received his letter in the mail the other day, I saw that his return address was a neat white sticker with an American flag and nicely scripted font. I sighed and stifled the pain seeing that caused me. Think about it: if you had promised the separation from your children's mother would only be temporary-- an effort to "figure things out"-- would you go through the trouble to order return address stickers instead of hastily writing what your apartment's address was with a pen? *** Well, I had not meant this entry to be yet another example demonstrating my naivite. On the contrary, karma has rewarded my efforts accordingly. *evil grin* But first... a demonstration on the blondness that is Sam... We're building saw horses in my stagecraft class using different kinds of wood joints. It's a project that's meant to teach us to foster good craftsmanship, but we all know it's also a good excuse for Rob and Steve to get new saw horses for the scene shop-- and we're cheap prime labor for that. I was on a roll yesterday, cutting my half lap joints and keystones on the radial arm saws with the dido blades, and when I finished, I laid all my pieces out on the floor and began fitting them together like puzzle pieces. I sanded the edges of the first half and used the pneumatic staple gun with 1/4" crown staples to attach the keystones for added support. With one half of the project finished, I put it in an out-of-the-way place and was gone for ten minutes tops as I sanded the other half of the project. When I returned, the boys kidded me about being in the Stagecraft II class and threatened to switch the pieces of my project. When they went back to work, I picked up the staple gun and attached the keystones to the saw horse. With a feeling of satisfaction of nearly completing this project, I went to lift up the second half of the saw horse... And I couldn't get it up off the floor. At first I thought I might have gone overboard with the glue... but it wasn't budging at all. I stood back and with horror realized that I had fucking staple-gunned half my project to the floor! The boys had switched pneumatic guns on the air hose with longer staples while I was sanding the wood at the other end of the scene shop. "Oh shit." At once Steve and the boys comprehended what had happened, and they took great pains to round up everyone in the shop, including Rob, so they could all stand around and laugh at my predicament. Mica exclaimed, "This is the greatest thing to happen since I stapled an entire wall to a table last fall!" I laughed with them, but it was more like a maniacal bordering-on-the-edge-of-sobbing sort of laugh, like Why the hell does this shit only happen to me?! Finally Steve got a wonder bar and pried my project up from the floor. He set it up and laughed at seeing the deadly prongs of 36 individual staples. "We should have left it there for posterity," he chuckled. I growled something in reply. Thank God Rob said, "Don't worry about it. All you have to do is grind down the staples and attach keystones to the other side." Good. Because I wasn't about to start over. *** Earlier in the day, I was painting something for the show Lucky Stiff when Ron came by and said, "Oh, by the way, you're designing for Mike's show next semester." I paused. "What?" "For A Piece of My Heart? I talked to him about you designing the sets on your own, and he seemed excited by the idea," Ron replied, giving me his best devious smile. It didn't hit me until later in the day. I said to Brian, "Guess what! I'm a scenic designer now!"
