The Diary of Queen Mothy |
Pink and Lime Green Means Success written @ 4:00 PM on May 13, 2004 My family up in Rhode Island is expecting Uncle Alan (see previous entry) sometime next week. A disgruntled Uncle Mark is calling his arrival the "Second Coming," which I find hilarious on many levels. *** I met with Joe from Ovation Theatre Tuesday night at the local coffe shop to talk about a possible scenic design position starting in the fall. As it turns out, I was hired! Hazaa! If I was terribly interested, I could design the entire season if I wanted to, but with the Y.E.S. Festival coming up next year at school, I might take only two or three of the plays that they plan to produce so far. They have a larger budget for the sets than the Performance Gallery did, plus I get my own union carpenter, set decorator, and any other crew I may need. They have warehouses full of stuff that I could use, too, which always helps. Pay would come in stipends, but they've increased the pay of the designers for every show produced. The theatre is on the same block as the Aronoff Center, and it's a black box theatre formation, which I feel comfortable with. Joe says he's going to begin sending me scripts, and if I wanted to, I could come work on their last production this summer before the season starts up again so I can get my feet wet. How about that, folks?! Fall employment! In other progressive theatre news, Director Diabla actually approved my pink and lime green color scheme for the Nunsense show I'm designing for summer dinner theatre. Of course, she did adjust her spectacles at the sudden change of colors from muted yellow to "very berry," but I'm beginning to learn it's not too hard to assert your position on matters of design at her meetings. You just have to be as stubborn as a Taurus and slick as an eel. *** Boy, my sophomore year of college passed in a blur. It's so surreal that I have junior status now. Over all, it was a good year. It was rough in many spots because, good Lord, all I did was homework. I can recall only about a dozen instances in the past 18 weeks when I left the campus for a social event. Wow, I sucked. Like any year, though, it had its peaks and valleys. The valleys tended to be a little deeper this year, but I've made progress in all aspects of my life. In any case, I'm moving on from all the troubles. It could have been far worse. There's no point in regretting anything when all is said and done. There's a lot I can comment on, but I think Liz summed it up in her diary as poignantly as it could have been said. After I victoriously landed my pink and lime green set at the production meeting yesterday, I headed home. For good this time. I spent a large portion of the time unpacking stuff and putting things away. I got two packages in the mail for my birthday, one of which was from my grandmother in Rhode Island. She charitably gave me moolah and a huge antique photo album filled with pre-1900 portraits. It's really cool. On the phone, she told me Grandpa picked it up in an antique store 35 years ago, but she can't remember why they bought it. But since I expressed an interest in antique photographs, she pulled it out of her attic and sent it to me. They really are interesting photos. Some of them are family shots, some dressed up children, some of men in uniform, a few women dressed in their tight corsets. A lot of them had messages on the back, along with dates and the names and ages of the individuals. Most of the photos came from Newport and Providence, Rhode Island, but a lot of them hailed from Zanesville, Ohio, which I found strange. Last night Mia, Christine, and I went to the mall for some splurging. Actually, they splurged. I was being cheap. Although I liked some of the T's they had at Charlotte Russe, I can't justify paying $20 plus tax for two paper-thin tops. And for five whole minutes, I entertained the idea of buying something at Lerner NY. Maybe one day. For now I'll keep my boring, pseudo-bohemian artist look.
