The Diary of Queen Mothy |
Three Cheers for Stuff! written @ 10:35 PM on April 20, 2004 A week or two ago, I entered an art competition on campus that was entitled "The Legacy of Slavery in the Northern Kentucky Area." It was actually required for my painting class to enter, but we had less than a week to pull it off. That's when I visited that old plantation in Richwood in search of inspiration. I grew up a white, suburban Yankee down to the marrow of my bones, so I simply thought to get a new perspective. That's what college is all about, right? Anyway, my final drawing I did in pastel, and was a portrait of a ghostly modern African slave in Civil War garb standing in a corner of the dilapidated house on the plantation. In my statement, I explained that it was a piece about being haunted by a memory and chained to an idea, with grim anticipation toward a difficult choice: remain on the master's land or try for freedom that's not exactly guaranteed in Cincinnati. My statement was all very poetic and profound, even for my own style. The results? I didn't make the cut. The judge was the same one who juried the student art show this year: aka, a real hard ass. BUT, as my painting professor explained to me, a bunch of the teachers from the art department began an argument with the judge over why he rejected my piece. Which is exciting! No one's ever fought over my art before! This is a good sign. Oh well. There's always next year. *** In further news in the World of Art According to Sam, I'm designing a logo for this community service group in Fairfield that Cincinnati Reds player Sean Casey sponsors and former Reds player Joe Nuxhall started... or something. I finished designing it yesterday, and I received positive feedback today. I didn't even know who the aforementioned people were until my roommate-- a huge baseball fan-- nearly had a conniption when I told her about it. You see what happens when you hole yourself up in your work? Whether or not I'm getting paid doesn't even matter to me. It's a new adventure, no? *** Also, you may remember I inquired about a scenic design position at Ovation Theatre after reading a local newspaper. Well, I heard back from them; they want an interview over coffee. Well, they didn't say "interview," more like a discussion about "the future." Whatever! I read it as good news! Hurrah! *victory dance* Three cheers for professional theater!
