The Diary of Queen Mothy |
The Big 2-0 written @ 11:54 AM on May 17, 2004 My 20th birthday was Saturday and, except for the moment Ashley and Casey kidnapped me from my house to go down to Newport and see the Shadowbox Cabaret, it was a rather tranquil, i.e. uneventful, birthday which was my over all wish. A chilly rain had commenced that early morning, and it was most definitely not flip-flop weather in West Chester, or the W.C. as I've taken to refer to it. Of course, chilly and wet weather does not stop my mother to offering boons to the gods of the Land of Yard Sales, and our first mission was my church's own. I ended up buying a box of random bits of cloth that I could use for still lives, some faux grapes for my latest series of still lives, and a small table on which to rest my oversized paint palette. Cost me $6.50 in all, but the militant old church ladies operating the cash register almost sucked me for $9.50. Well, you can best bet I put my foot down. I wasn't about to argue pennies with some Catholic crones on MY birthday, so I worked my voodoo on them (which is really one step short of my signature Sam Death Stare) and insisted that if the price tag on the damned box says $3 then I will pay $3, not $5! *sweet smile* Afterwards Mom and I went to the Brash Armadillo, the local antique warehouse, and I perused the aisles for stuff that I wanted... really just unicorns. But they didn't really have any unicorns there today (because I tend to buy them out). Mom, however, ended up buying me an enameled unicorn bracelet that she slipped in my gifts later. Which brings me to the booty. For my birthday, I got The Art of Happiness by the Dalai Lama and The Art of War by Sun Tzu. Ironic, no? I always wanted to read them, though. Then, to satisfy the Catholic heretic side of me, I got a book called The Psycho Bible, which is basically a psychologist's approach to the Bible and offers a twist to biblical philosophies as they stand from a historical standpoint. Believe me, you'll get my thoughts on that later. To make sure I don't have too much fun dancing with the pagans, Mom got me The Passion soundtrack, which, as far as movie sountracks go, is quickly growing on me. Note: Just because I like Mel Gibson's directing as it applies to his movies doesn't make me a member of the Church of Mel Gibson. Just thought I'd clear that up. The last of the books I received was Garth Nix's Abhorsen, the final chapter of his Sabriel trilogy. I began reading the triology back in the nineth grade, but he only recently came out with his last installment in paperback. It's going to be a while before I get to that one, though, because I'm in the middle of White Oleander. Yes, to answer your question, it was an Oprah's Book Club selection. Normally I stray from reading material house wives who idolize Martha Stewart and Oprah tend to read, but this one is actually pretty good. Other gems: buttons from Northern Sun, soon to be added to my collection on my book bag! These include "Jesus Was a Liberal," "Cleverly Disguised as a Responsible Adult," "Vote Republican: It's Easier Than Thinking," and others. I also got the Sgt. Peppers Art Lives band shirt, which is *sniff* just beautiful. Also received: the obligatory gift certificates to Barnes and Noble and Hobby Lobby, unicorns (!), new clothing, an optical mouse for my laptop, and old photographs. Ah yes, the old photographs. The newest one that I have is dated 1917 and includes a humerous message on the back: "Hello Edna put this where the rats can see it and I am sure they will leave and soon with love. From your friend, Lula." I do want to start a website that catalogs my old photo collection. Who knows what genealogists may find? I have old photos from Covington, Kentucky to Zanesville, Ohio to villages in Pennsylvania to places in New York to Newport and Providence, Rhode Island. That evening, as mentioned, Ashley, Casey and Jeff (members of the high school posse for those who are reading this from Live Journal) kidnapped me and took me to see the Shadowbox Cabaret for the first time. It was a lot of fun. I'm sure it would be more fun if you're of drinking age, but to be honest I found the cast and crew a helluva lot funnier than most things on SNL these days. I think I liked their music performances a little better than their skits, but over all, I think I'll be back to see some more shows. It's a fun thing to do on Saturday night anyway. Thanks for bringing me out of my cave, guys! *** So that was my birthday. I've been busy with stuff for work (sort of), but mostly I've been plugging away at my latest series of paintings. To get warmed up for the summer, I've set upon doing fruit still lives using extreme lighting conditions and my pseudo-impressionist color style. So far, so good. I heisted five flats from the theatre department at school and converted them into canvases, so I guess my series is going to have five fruit paintings, the first of which being grapes. I'll post pictures here sometime. Anyhoo, with only 17 days until Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban comes out, I'm organizing a shin-dig to go see it. Let me know if you're game on June 4th!
