The Diary of Queen Mothy |
Don't Be the Bunny! written @ 6:15 PM on November 02, 2003 Saturday afternoon some people I know from theater were going to go downtown to see Urinetown, which won a bunch of Tonys on Broadway and people at school rave about, and because Annalyse decided not to go on that particular day, I got her ticket. I hadn't planned on going because I was looking forward to some quiet time by myself in the studio, but having decided to be sociable and to go see a wonderful show at a cheap price of $18, I said what the hell. It was by far one of the most bizarre musicals I have ever seen. Here I will try to explain its plot: In a town that could be called "Anywhere, USA," the people are suffering from a long term draught that's lasted for years. So water is being conserved to an outrageous degree, and legislature has passed laws forbidding private bathrooms and have taxed public urinals to the umpteeth percent. Anyone violating these laws are hauled off to Urinetown-- thing is, nobody knows what Urinetown is. After having witnessed his father being hauled off to Urinetown, Bobby Strong decides to lead a revolution, because, let's be frank, people should have to pee for free. And in the meantime, he falls for Hope Cladwell, the daughter of Cladwell B. Cladwell, who owns the business conglomerate Urine Good Hands. It's a smart gothic comedy full of symbolism and makes fun of 10 different musicals during the show's run, even though judging by this conservative synopsis it's extremely bizarre. But rest assured it's comedic value is off the charts, and I would wager to say it's one of my favorite musicals of all time. So, if you get the chance, go see Urinetown-- and "don't be the bunny!" After the show, we tip-toed to the stage door and met the actors as they came out of the dressing rooms. I didn't get any autographs, but Brian and a few others did. I kind of hung around in the background and mingled. Christiane Noll, whose phenomenal voice can be heard in the latest release of Jekyll and Hyde opposite of Linda Eder, was playing Hope Cladwell, and to be sure, I almost collapsed to the ground like Wayne and Garth did for Alice Cooper and proclaimed, "We're not worthy! We're not worthy!" The woman who played Carlotta from the original company of Phantom of the Opera, another theatrical hero of mine, had a significant part in this show, and I met her. All in all, they had some big names playing in the cast of Urinetown. The Cincinnati run of the show ends tonight, and Brian is going to see it again, this time armed to the teeth with more Sharpies and autograph-signable material. Seems to me he'll be trying to get the woman who played Little Sally to go out to lunch with him; that's what he did when he saw the touring show of Aida down in Louisville. And the girl who played Aida in that show did go out to lunch with him, ended up pouring out her entire life's story with all her problems, gave him her e-mail address, and he claims he still talks to her faithfully. "Stalking" famous actors of the theater has become something of a past time of his. You should see the picture he has of him and Bernadette Peters, who's still playing in Gypsy on Broadway as far as I know. First of all, she doesn't look as if she's in her fifties at all; in fact, she mildly reminded me of Kate Winslet with her make-up on. And there's Brian in the photo, grinning from ear-to-ear like he was the luckiest bastard in the world. Annalyse dressed up and acted like Brian on Halloween. Apparently she was the hit of Andrew's party on Friday night. So after getting back from downtown, I spent a good part of the evening in the studio. I'm just about finished my self-portrait and I started a painting of a Japanese maple tree. Today I did some errands, bought new paint thinner, and did much of the same thing as last night. It feels so good to paint whatever the hell you want to paint, pop in a CD of a musical, and go to town with no one else in the studio to bother you. *** On a side note, please excuse the mess of this template design. I'm still ironing out a few wrinkles with the html.
