Mars 'n' Stuff written @ 6:36 PM on August 28, 2003 For one of the few times in my academic career, I have no homework, and the only thing I can attribute this oddity to is the whole Mars versus Earth thing that has all the zodiac up in arms. Nothing to do. Incroyable! I had a good sleep and woke up at the shining time of nine am, took my time getting ready, grabbed a taza chai at the Starbucks in the science center, and then went off to my scenic design class, hauling about 700 pounds worth of photo equipment. I tell you, people make me feel like a martyr when they see this little white hippie girl hauling half her life on top of her head, valiantly making her way to the Fine Arts Center. A path forms in the sea of throngs. They bow to my talent of carrying a flaming hot cup of designer coffee in one hand, the huge white bag of film, papers, reels, chemicals, and gallon jugs balanced precariously on the other. Professors remove their caps and sigh, "There goes Sam: she who will die for her art... or the inevitable heat stroke." In any case, I am so pysched about my scenic design class. I feel like I'm ten years old again and I'm soaking up everything I hear about this art. I want to read about other scenic designers and what they have done; I want to learn everything I can about it. I think I have found my niche: I think this is where fate wants me to be. Once more, I see infinite possibilities. I think it's my job to take what others have done and turn the whole design industry upside down-- learn the rules and then break them! Yessir! I'm here to move mountains. But first... I need to learn how to develop film. Yes, folks, we've reached that part in my entry where I discuss my photography class. I've never been so scared to touch a roll of film in all my life. But not to worry: today I successfully learned how to load a roll of film onto a reel in complete and utter darkness. And on Tuesday, I'll be adding the chemicals, which I mixed up in my brown jugs this afternoon, and will develop my negatives. Exciting times, we live in. And speaking of exciting times, I'm going up to the Honors House at 9:30 this evening to see Mars. The astronomy club on campus is setting up telescopes in the parking lot of the Honors House, and I'm going to get a damned good look at the red planet. Now here's something to ponder: Think about all these wonderful times during the course of our lifetimes when something awesome was happening in the cosmos. We've got asteroids, rare planet line-ups, lots of blue moons, meteor showers-- so much in the past twenty years, if you go through the archives. What an exciting time to be alive.
