The Diary of Queen Mothy |
Optimistically Artistic written @ 5:02 PM on March 17, 2003 Coming back to the dorm last night was an unfortunate experience because a) my vacation was over and b) the rooms were registering 91 degrees. Seems as though they put the heat up when everyone left for spring break to make sure the pipes don't freeze or some nonsense like that. If someone on campus would listen to the Weather Channel every now and then, they would know there was no way in hell that was about to happen. But anyway, apparently there was a fire in the dorm last week. Some schmuck set fire to the trash can in the boys' bathroom and gutted the entire facility before five fire engines succeeded in putting the blaze out. It took them awhile to find it. If you walk into Kentucky Hall now, you could still smell the smoke. Welp, the results for the art exhibition are in, and I succeeded in getting one out of five pieces accepted to the show. As a freshman, I am damned lucky, they tell me. Even so, it vexes me that they took one of my least favorite drawings out of my two best paintings. But I guess that's how it goes-- your trash is someone else's treasure. I was really jealous of people who got all five of their pieces accepted because they didn't have the unfortunate experience of having to drag their oversized artwork back to their place of residence and deal with frame brackets snapping on you. I tell you, sometimes I look back on high school and I wonder how I ever managed to drag my entire portfolio in and out day-in and day-out for an entire year. Anyway, I am a little disappointed that my better pieces weren't chosen, but hey, one is better than nothing, right? Next year I'll try to put in enough good stuff that I won't be hauling any pieces back. Suffice to say, however, I got a true taste of what competition in the real art world is like, and man, if you thought surviving in the theater as an actor was tough, you need the hide of a rhinoceros for the visual arts. Goddamn. Speaking of theater, tonight is the first rehearsal for the show I'm stagemanaging, "Three Girls, Four Seasons." Bound to be an interesting experience. I also procured an Art Director position for the entire Y.E.S. Festival! I'm pretty excited about that. My John Hancock is going to be in all three shows! Yes, I'll be a busy girl, what with that theater hullabaloo mixed with art and my other classes, but hey-- what a way to end the year with a bang! Over all, I am pretty optimistic.
